Tips and Tricks for Perfect Perky Boysenberry Pie

Mixed Berry Pie by thefeedfeed | Quick & Easy Recipe | The Feedfeed

  • Selecting Fresh Boysenberries: Opt for plump, ripe boysenberries with a deep purple-black color. Their sweetness and juiciness will shine through in the pie.
  • Blind Baking: To prevent a soggy bottom crust, consider blind baking the crust before adding the filling. This involves partially baking the crust before filling it to ensure it stays crisp.
  • Draining Frozen Berries: If using frozen boysenberries, make sure to thaw and drain them well to avoid excess moisture in the filling.
  • Sweetness Control: Taste the berries before adding sugar to the filling. Adjust the sugar quantity based on the natural sweetness of the berries to achieve the desired balance.
  • Cornstarch for Thickening: Use cornstarch as a thickening agent for the filling. It binds excess moisture and prevents a runny pie.
  • Even Distribution: Spread the berry filling evenly in the pie crust. This ensures consistent flavor in every slice.
  • Lattice Crust Artistry: If you’re feeling adventurous, try a lattice crust for a visually appealing finish. Weave the strips over the filling in a crisscross pattern.
  • Egg Wash Brilliance: Brush the crust with an egg wash before baking. It imparts a lovely golden sheen and adds a touch of richness to the pie’s appearance.
  • Cooling Period: Allow the pie to cool for a while after baking before slicing. This helps the filling set and makes for cleaner cuts.
  • Serving Warm or Chilled: Enjoy the pie warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a comforting treat. Alternatively, refrigerate it to enjoy it chilled on a hot summer day.
